Title: The Steps of Montjuïc — Palau Nacional, Barcelona
Original On-Site Acrylic Painting | Barcelona, Spain
Painted on location in Barcelona, The Steps of Montjuïccaptures the magnificentPalau Nacional on Montjuïc, the landmark that today houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC). The palace was constructed for Barcelona’s 1929 International Exposition and is distinguished by its monumental central dome, two smaller domes, towers, terraces, and grand approach.
The viewpoint depicted in this original acrylic is from the landscaped stairways and terraces ascending Montjuïc toward the Palau Nacional, above the grand approach from Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina. The museum itself identifies the Palau Nacional as being on Montjuïc and describes its frontal approach by the monumental stone staircase rising from Reina Maria Cristina.
Unlike a studio painting created from a photograph, this piece was painted on site, allowing the atmosphere of Barcelona to become part of the work itself. Warm Mediterranean sunlight washes across the palace's golden architecture, while brilliant greens, deep shadows, and a vivid blue sky bring the gardens of Montjuïc to life.
The ascending stone staircase draws the viewer into the composition, leading the eye through the balustrades and trees toward the domes rising above the landscape. Loose, energetic brushwork in the foliage and sky contrasts beautifully with the more deliberate architectural detail of the palace, creating a balance between the permanence of architecture and the movement of light and nature.
The Palau Nacional was built between 1926 and 1929 as the centerpiece of the International Exposition and later became home to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. Its enormous central dome was inspired by St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, while its towers draw inspiration from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
“The Steps of Montjuïc” is therefore more than a portrait of one of Barcelona's great landmarks. It is an artist's firsthand impression of a particular place and moment—the architecture, sunlight, gardens, color, and atmosphere experienced while standing there and painting it.
