“Where Laguna Meets the Sea” is an original watercolor painted on location in Laguna Beach, California, capturing the brilliant color, movement, and unmistakable atmosphere of the Southern California coastline.

For me, this painting is also personal. I grew up in Southern California, where the Pacific Ocean, palm-lined coastlines, rocky coves, warm sunlight, and beach communities have been part of the landscape I've known throughout my life. Laguna Beach has always represented so much of what makes this part of California special—the meeting of dramatic coastline, vibrant color, natural beauty, and a long tradition of art.

Painting this piece on site allowed me to experience the scene rather than simply reproduce it later in a studio. The changing sunlight, movement of the waves, colors of the water, and atmosphere of the coast all influenced the finished work.

A towering palm frames the composition while the coastline sweeps into the distance, lined with palms and rocky cliffs. Below, layers of turquoise, deep Pacific blue, and white surf move toward shore, contrasting against the warmth of the rocks, vegetation, and sunlit landscape.

Watercolor brings a particular energy to the scene. The transparency and movement of the medium complement the constantly changing ocean, while the more detailed passages capture the character of the palms, cliffs, rocks, and coastal vegetation.
